History
West Windsor Township is one of the 12 municipalities of Mercer County, New Jersey. The Township, largely suburban, is roughly equidistant between New York City and Philadelphia on the Northeast Corridor, and the U.S. Census Bureau considers it to be located within the New York-Newark, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area.
West Windsor's local governance is organized under provisions of the Faulkner Act, also known as the 1950 Optional Municipal Charter Law. Specifically, as of 1993, the Township follows the Mayor-Council form of New Jersey municipal government (Plan 6), with a Mayor holding executive powers and a five-member Township Council constituting the legislative branch. Both the Mayor and Council members serve four-year staggered terms and run in nonpartisan elections administered in odd-numbered years. Before the implementation of this Mayor-Council arrangement, West Windsor was overseen by a Township Committee mixing legislative and executive authority that dated back to 1797.
The Township has changed greatly since it last altered its form of government. In 2023, West Windsor's population was an estimated 30,509, nearly double that of the 1990 census's 16,021. The Township has further diversified, too, with >50% of residents now identifying as being of Asian descent, in comparison to the 23% recorded in 2000.
